OpenIDEO: immunization innovation
WHO: In collaboration with Maria Claudia Barcha, John Y. John & Francisco Sarolli
WHAT: business strategy, UX design, social innovation, graphic design, illustration
HOW: The task of this OpenIDEO challenge is: How might we empower caregivers to seek and fully utilize immunization services in their communities? (Full challenge brief HERE) We are one of the 30 projects that made it to the refinement phase among 90+ submissions.
TAKEAWAY: It is important to check our own biases at the door as designers and design for the users with scientific testing.
the solution
We leverage existing resources with bottom-up storytelling for impactful immunization engagement. We illustrated the process from the perspective of facilitator of the storytelling workshops that we designed.
system thinking
The idea of designing a dynamic system with effective feedback loops came from the discrepancy with the perceived state and the expected goals of the existing service system. Immunization system for caregivers is no less than a wicked problem. We believe a user-centric storytelling approach with ease the tension and build trust between customers and service providers.

the iceberg of immunization
In our research, we focused on understanding the eco system of immunization service in the local community and the underlining causality of low engagement. So we talked to experts with field experience, complementary to our desk research, before burying the causality in our own assumption. What are the societal, environmental, economical factors? What is on the bottom of the iceberg?
"Outside the U.S., It's All About WhatsApp"
One discovery is that how commonly used WhatsApp is used outside the US and WeChat in the greater China region. The primary information source of the caregivers sometimes can only be their husbands. We noticed an opportunity to utilize the misuse of certain communication channels, how people spread rumors through gifs or word of mouth for example, to disseminate information on immunization.
business model
The best fit for our strategy proposal is an open source with workshop facilitation instructions. Healthcare services can get access to it for free and benefit more.
